The whole of the SADC Region is in a power deficit since 2007 and Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) has taken a lead in the co-ordination of DSM programs through the DSM Working Group (DSMWG).
The majority of SAPP members have implemented the CFL Residential Roll out Business Case. ZETDC successfully completed the free exchange programme of CFLs in 2013. 1 million CFLs were distributed in 171 905 houses and a verified saving of 42MW was realised. The technology of CFLs is now being fast replaced by the safer and efficient led lighting.
SAPP Demand Side Management Task Team Members met on 21 February 2015 to discuss migration from incandescent/CFL bulbs to LED bulbs and from fluorescent tubes to led lighting. A draft LED Business Case was crafted. While replacement of incandescent bulbs with CFLs realised about 80% power and energy savings, it has been noted that migration of same to led lighting will result in up to 90% power and energy savings.
ZETDC has started the LED Commercial lighting programme by replacing fluorescent fittings with 50Watt LED panels at ZETDC Head Office in the 5th floor. A statistical meter was installed and power/energy savings of 80% realised as shown on the graph below. SAAP DSM Task Team Members came at ZETDC Head Office to witness the brilliance of LED lighting.
